4 Tips For Maintaining A Healthy Immune System
Your immune system is your body's defense against infections. It basically attacks germs and helps keep you healthy. So here are four straightforward tips to make sure you are keeping your immune system fit and strong!
ONE: Eat Healthy Foods
Be sure to include a lot of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables in your diet. The vitamins and minerals in food are the lifelines that all the systems in our bodies rely on to function well, including your immune system. The more you feed your body with nutrient-rich foods, the better it runs. Don’t forget to keep a check on your alcohol consumption as well. Too much alcohol can also interfere with your immune system.
TWO: Stay Active
Regular exercise not only improves your overall fitness; it also helps boost your immune system. Some studies show that moderate-intensity exercise may actually cut down the number of colds and infections you get. That type of activity includes things like going to the gym every couple of days or taking a 20- to 30-minute walk each day. You can check out Plus Fitness-Caddens to achieve your fitness goals.
THREE: Get Enough Sleep
Healthy sleep supports your immune system in a whole range of ways. Studies show that people who don't get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. A lack of sleep or interrupted sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick, so make sure you keep a focus on getting your fair share.
FOUR: Manage Your Stress
Stress is known to suppress immune function and increase susceptibility to infections. Endorphins are a great natural stress buster. Endorphins are effectively chemicals in the brain that are released when you exercise. These endorphins improve the ability to sleep, which in turn reduces stress. Make sure you get your ‘endorphin hit’ each day by keeping up your exercise routine. Also make sure you are allocating time to relax and wind down at the end of a busy day. Both of these will help you manage your stress.

Set for Success: How to Empower Your Child with Swim Goals
As we kick off 2025, setting swim goals for your little ones is a fantastic way to keep them motivated and engaged throughout the year.
At JUMP! Swim School - Caddens Corner, setting clear, achievable goals is key to helping children build confidence, focus, and resilience in the water. This year, let’s empower your child to progress by making their swim journey both enjoyable and rewarding.
Why Set Swim Goals?
Setting goals gives your child a clear path to follow, helping them build essential skills while fostering a sense of accomplishment with every milestone. Whether it’s mastering the backstroke or simply getting comfortable with water play, goals provide a sense of direction and purpose that can significantly increase motivation. Achieving these goals isn’t just about hitting a target – it’s about celebrating small successes that build your child’s confidence and make swimming lessons more exciting and enjoyable.
How to Set Effective Swim Goals
Keep It Fun and Positive: The atmosphere around setting swim goals should be light and celebratory. Choose goals that make your child eager to jump into the pool! Whether it’s learning to float on their back or trying a new stroke, keeping the goals fun and achievable will lead to big smiles and lots of enthusiasm.
Involve Your Child in the Process: Ask your little one what they want to work on in their swimming lessons. Whether it’s going underwater or learning to kick, involving them in setting their own goals gives them ownership of their progress and helps them stay engaged with their swimming journey. This personal investment can make the experience more rewarding for them.
Celebrate Progress: Every time your child reaches a goal, celebrate! A high five, a special treat, or even a sticker chart can make each accomplishment feel extra special. Acknowledging their hard work and progress will keep them motivated and excited to continue learning.
Consider Going a Step Further: Make Goals SMART
To take your child’s goal-setting to the next level, help them create SMART goals.
Specific: The goal should be clear and well-defined. For example, instead of just saying, “I want to get better at floating,” try saying, “I want to float on my back for 10 seconds.”
Measurable: The goal should be something you can track. For example, “I want to swim 5 meters on my own” makes it easy to see progress.
Achievable: The goal should be challenging, but also something that your child feels confident they can achieve. It’s important to set a goal that encourages progress without overwhelming them.
Relevant: The goal should match your child’s interests and where they are in their swimming journey. If they’re excited about diving, for example, a goal like “jump into the pool with confidence” could be a great choice.
Time-bound: Set a timeframe for the goal, like “I want to float on my back for 10 seconds by the end of this month” or “I want to swim 5 meters on my own before the next swimming term.”
Not to sure what goals to set?
Here are some common swim goals based on your child’s stage in their swimming journey:
Not sure what goals to set? Here are some common swim goals based on your child’s stage in their
swimming journey:For Younger Swimmers
Blow bubbles with their face fully underwater
Float on their back for 10 seconds unassisted
Get comfortable with water play
For Intermediate Swimmers
Swim 5 meters on their own
Be competent in survival backstroke
Learn how to tread water
At JUMP! Caddens Corner, their expert instructors will guide your little one every step of the way, providing a fun and supportive environment where they can grow, learn, and reach their swimming milestones. Let’s make 2025 a year of progress and water confidence for your child.
How To Protect Teeth And Avoid Decay With Fluoride Treatment
The most effective means to protect teeth and avoid tooth decay is through the ingestion of fluoride. Fluoride is a mineral that humans gain from almost all food and water they consume. For over fifty years, professional and health organisations have endorsed the health benefits of fluoride. But what is fluoride? What types of fluoride are there? And, when should I get a fluoride treatment?
What types of fluoride are there?
Topical fluoride
Topical fluoride fortifies the teeth once they have emerged from the gums. It seeps into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, allowing the teeth to build up resistance to deterioration. Dental products such as toothpaste, mouthwashes, and gels provide us with topical fluoride.
Children should receive a professional application of fluoride every six months by their dentist or dental hygienist. Topical fluoride strengthens the teeth that have erupted as well as those that have not yet emerged from the gums.
Systemic fluoride
Systemic fluoride is naturally present in most foods and our community water supplies. Your dentist or physician may also prescribe a systemic fluoride supplement in drop or gel form.
Generally, fluoride drops are recommended for infants, while children and teenagers should use fluoride tablets. The amount of fluoride a child ingests should be carefully limited. Excessive consumption of fluoride while the teeth are developing may result in a condition called fluorosis, characterised by white spots forming on the teeth.
While our daily meals are an important source of fluoride, sometimes the amounts received are not sufficient to help prevent decay.
Fluoride treatments
Fluoride treatments, in the form of professional applications or home-kits, can be used to correct the following problems, such as:
Deep pits and cracks on the biting surfaces of teeth
Exposed and sensitive root surfaces
Unsatisfactory oral hygiene habits
Frequent consumption of sugar and carbohydrates
Inadequate exposure to fluorides
Inadequate saliva flow due to medical conditions, medical treatments or medications
Recent history of dental decay
Remember, fluoride treatment cannot prevent tooth alone! Brushing at least twice a day, flossing regularly, eating balanced meals, reducing your consumption of sugary snacks, and regularly visiting your dentist can assist in ensuring your smile remains healthy.
The Caddens Dental Bar is an affordable family dentist in Caddens, Penrith. They are 100% focused on excellence and honesty, with emergency and same-day appointments available.

Give your child a swimming kickstart with lessons at JUMP! Caddens Corner
JUMP! Swim School is a boutique learn-to-swim facility for babies aged from 3 months through to stroke development. JUMP! Caddens Corner is the way learn to swim should be for your child — small intimate classes free of distractions, expert qualified swimming teachers, and a heated purpose-built indoor pool.
What makes JUMP! unique?
JUMP! Caddens Corner has a UV/Ozone disinfection system from Brauer Industries. UV/Ozone, or AOP, disinfection is now a well-established method of chemical-free indoor swimming pool water treatment, from hydrotherapy pools to indoor full-sized competition pools. The AOP system is not only highly effective at destroying chlorine-resistant micro-organisms like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, it improves bathers’ enjoyment by destroying chloramines and delivering visibly clearer water, minimising red eye, stinging eyes, and skin irritation. It also allows them to use dramatically less chlorine in the pool water and keeps the water clearer and with less odours.
Every child should feel safe and at home on their swimming journey.
Woolworths Almond Ginger Cake Recipe
Combining the warmth of gingerbread with the elegance of a naked cake, this festive masterpiece will wow guests with its irresistible flavour and stunning presentation.
Ingredients
1/2 cup Lucky Natural Pistachios
250g unsalted butter, softened
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
2 tbs golden syrup
6 eggs
3/4 cup buttermilk
2 cups self-raising flour
3/4 cup Lucky Almond Meal
2 tsp ground ginger
1/3 cup Lucky Toasted Sliced Almonds
1 punnet rosemary, sprigs separated
75g raspberries
2 tsp icing sugar
Cream-cheese frosting:
375g cream cheese, softened
50g unsalted butter, softened
2 cups icing sugar mixture, sifted
Directions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Grease and line sides and bases of 2 x 20cm (base) round cake pans with baking paper. Process pistachios until fine crumbs form. Using an electric mixer, beat butter, sugar and syrup in a bowl until pale. Add eggs, one at a time, beating until combined. Fold in buttermilk and combined flour, almond meal, ginger and pistachio crumbs. Divide between prepared pans. Smooth surfaces. Bake for 40 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
Step 2
To make frosting, using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and butter in a bowl until creamy. Gradually add icing sugar, beating until combined. Place 1 cake on a plate. Spread with 1 cup frosting. Top with remaining cake. Spread remaining frosting over top and side of cake, scraping away excess, to create a ‘semi-naked’ edge. Refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Step 3
Decorate cake with almonds, rosemary sprigs and raspberries. Dust rosemary with icing sugar and serve.

Beyond Four Walls: How Outdoors Nurtures Growth
Outdoor Learning Improves Inner Development
It’s time to discover the great outdoors – and the great benefits of playing outside. From enhancing their curiosity to helping brain development, outdoor learning is an essential part of any early educational experience. The freedom to be outside improves self-confidence, creativity, and even concentration.
Connection with the world outside
Being outside lets children connect with the world around them. Whether it’s the beautiful busy or the urban jungle, you can benefit from any backyard. Senses can be heightened by any change in environment, experiencing new smells, textures, and light. The new stimuli help foster a connection to the world around them and inspire a sense of exploration.
Learning to work together
There is more freedom when playing games outside. Children can be louder, move around more, and create bigger and more complicated games. This kind of play is great for learning how to share, how to work well together in groups, and for improving social skills. It can also help children become more confident decision-makers in their daily lives.
Boosting brain function
Research shows that children who have quality outdoor play get a brain boost. Switching environments encourages being inventive and imaginative. This lays the foundation for approaching problems creatively and for conceptual thinking.
Get a greater education outdoors, with bespoke environments that nurture and inspire.

From fun play sessions and creative activities to moments of discovery, every day is packed with opportunities for growth and enjoyment. Understanding the daily schedule helps parents stay connected and engaged with their children's development.
Take a look and see how each day is made special for the little ones!
7:00 am – Centre Opens
As families arrive, the friendly staff greet them warmly. Children’s guardians sign them in and help them settle at an activity before saying goodbye. Children gather with their siblings and friends to enjoy breakfast together, as well as various activities, which is a special time for the children to be with each other.
8:30 am – 9:00 am – Munch and Move
Children are invited to join in the Munch and Move lesson of the day. The educators implement Munch and Move through a fun and play-based approach to promote physical activity, healthy eating, and reduced screen time.
9:00 am – 9:30 am – Group Time
During this time, children are invited to join in a yarning circle as topics such as the day of the week, the date, and the weather are discussed. Children are given the opportunity to share new interests, and family experiences over the weekend, and check in with their emotions to understand how they are feeling that day.
9:30 am – 10:00 am – Morning Tea
Children are served a freshly prepared, nutritionally balanced, seasonal morning tea made by qualified cooks in the fully equipped kitchen.
10:00 am – 11:00 am – Learning Experiences
Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities that support their physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language development. They can explore and learn through hands-on experiences and activities that match their individual interests. To learn more about the Prepare Early Education Program, click here.
11:00 am – 12:00 pm – Outdoor Learning
The outdoor environment is thoughtfully designed to support holistic development with engaging features like shaded areas, sandpits, climbing structures with a slide, and a water pump. This intentional design encourages children to explore and interact with nature, offering a variety of play experiences that meet their diverse needs and developmental stages. Educators carefully plan these opportunities to nurture growth, well-being, and physical development in each child.
12:00 pm – 2:30 pm – Lunch & Rest Time
Children enjoy a nutritious seasonal meal prepared by the cook, followed by rest time. Children who do not wish to sleep participate in learning experiences or enjoy outdoor play.
3:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Afternoon Tea and Storytime
Children enjoy a balanced, seasonal afternoon tea before heading outside to play in the shaded garden, where they can explore and connect with nature. During this time, they also participate in storytime, which boosts their language skills, imagination, and empathy.
4:00 pm – 5:45 pm – Indoor/Outdoor Play
In the late afternoon, children continue to learn through play, both indoors and outdoors. The carefully selected resources, books, and activities support their learning. Educators value child-initiated play and engage in co-constructed play, seizing opportunities to teach intentionally.
6:00 pm – 6:30 pm – The Centre Closes
As the day winds down, parents arrive to collect their children. They receive updates on their child’s exciting day and can read about their care routines.
At Prepare Early Education Centre (EEC), it is believed that the first five years in a child’s life are the most crucial for laying the foundation for future development. The centre respects that childhood is a journey of discovery and exploration, while also being a time to learn and experiment with life and the world.
Children learn through their experiences with play, self-independence, social interactions, and imitating others. Therefore, the environment is designed to stimulate their curiosity, provide independence, and expose children to a strong emphasis on demonstration and role modelling.
It is believed that all children have the right to equal opportunities, regardless of culture, religion, gender, socio-economic backgrounds, special needs, or abilities. The centre strives to provide a friendly environment that respects all children and reinforces and extends their home experiences, encouraging the development of their self-concept through inclusive practices.
Perks Of Protein: What Is Protein Really Doing For You?
It can be assumed that many have heard the term "protein" mentioned in discussions about maintaining a healthy diet.
Perhaps they are familiar with its most well-known role in repairing, building, and sustaining muscles in the body.
They may have also been informed that protein can help keep them fuller for longer.
However, protein serves many more functions than just these. Protein is a macronutrient, meaning it is one of the nutrients the body requires in large amounts. Proteins are composed of chains of amino acids, which determine the specific role of each protein within the body. With 20 different types of amino acids, 9 of which are considered "essential" and must be consumed as part of the diet, protein is responsible for much more than simply helping individuals get stronger.
Here’s a look at just 5 of the many important roles that protein plays within the body:
1. BUILDING, MAINTAINING AND REPAIRING MUSCLE
Let’s kick it off with the most obvious one, the job we all think of first, the role in helping you grow stronger.
Protein is essential for repairing, rebuilding, and maintaining muscle, promoting recovery and muscle protein synthesis. This process is vital for individuals looking to grow stronger after engaging in any form of resistance training or time under load.
When a muscle is subjected to load, such as during resistance training, it experiences slight damage and tearing due to the stress. Protein plays a crucial role in repairing these tears, facilitating recovery while also enabling muscles to adapt and grow stronger, preparing them to better handle similar stress in the future.
To achieve optimal results in terms of recovery time and overall muscular strength, it is essential to consume adequate protein daily, particularly within the 30 to 60 minutes following resistance training. This is where protein supplements can be beneficial, especially for those who may not be ready for their next meal or struggle to consume enough protein from whole food sources. Protein powders offer a convenient and accessible source of protein that can be consumed immediately after a workout, as a mid-afternoon snack, or to help balance any meal.
2. ENZYMES
Enzymes are proteins that aid, cause and speed up chemical reactions within your body during processes including digestion, breathing and nerve function.
To give you an example, during digestion, enzymes are responsible for breaking foods down to allow the body to take the energy it needs while also absorbing nutrients that are necessary to perform a variety of roles throughout the body.
3. HORMONES
Hormones are messengers in your body responsible for signalling actions to your skin, muscles and organs. Protein hormones (also known as polypeptide hormones) are responsible for a variety of responses in the body including growth, development, metabolism and reproduction, and include hormones like growth hormone and insulin. Studies have suggested that, particularly for females, adequate protein consumption can help to regulate some hormones responsible for mood, fertility and overall reproductive health.
4. SKIN CELL TURNOVER
You may have heard of collagen as one of the buzzwords flying around the beauty industry in particular. It’s growing quite the reputation as a powerful ingredient for anti-ageing as well as improved skin, hair and nail health.
And adding to the list of protein’s credentials, collagen is actually a type of protein!!
As a general rule, skin cells have a life span of roughly 30 days, with new cells constantly synthesised beneath old cells to replace them as they die off or become damaged. Proteins, like collagen, help to promote new production of cells, while also helping to improve skin hydration, elasticity and integrity. For this reason, oral consumption of collagen can help to improve overall skin appearance, strength and elasticity!
5. A LAST RESORT ENERGY SOURCE
To conclude, protein serves as the body's last resort when all other energy sources are depleted—though perhaps not in the way one might think.
Once an individual has met their daily protein requirements, any additional protein consumed will be converted and stored as glucose for energy use.
However, protein is the body’s least preferred energy source. It will always prioritise carbohydrates and fats as its primary sources of energy. This is due to the fact that breaking down amino acid chains requires significantly more energy than processing carbohydrates and fats, making protein the least efficient energy source.
Moreover, in situations of starvation, when all energy stores in the body are depleted, the body will begin to break down tissue proteins, particularly from muscle, to provide the necessary energy to sustain vital functions. This process can result in the loss of both fat and lean muscle mass, adversely affecting muscular strength and overall bodily function.
While protein has certainly become a buzzword and is often regarded as the "favourite child" among macronutrients due to its role in enhancing muscle strength and appearance, it is the lesser-known functions of protein that truly highlight its importance as a nutrient. These roles contribute significantly to overall health, happiness, and the ability to live life to the fullest.

Still dealing with hair damage? We’re here to help!
If you find that breakage is getting in the way of your best hair life, then that's a sure sign it's time to change up your hair care routine.
Below, we've put together some of the most common reasons why you might be experiencing damage and breakage, so you can say goodbye to breakage and hello to strong, healthy locks.
Heat Styling and Drying
It’s like a catch-22: you need your straightener and hairdryer to be as hot as a sunrise to tame your locks, but the higher the heat, the more the smell of burning hair fills the room. (And unlike the smell of success after you draw the perfect wing, that’s not a scent we want to be experiencing, just as an FYI.)
If putting down the heat tools for a minute and giving your hair a break simply isn't an option for you, we recommend turning the heat down and prepping your locks with heat protectant sprays to help keep breakage and damage at bay.
Chemical Colouring
Dyeing your hair blonde is all fun and games until it starts to look and feel like straw. With a cocktail of chemicals like hydrogen peroxide and ammonia (just to name a few), it makes sense that regularly dyeing your hair isn’t actually doing it any good.
But that doesn’t mean your quarter-life hair crisis can’t still be on the cards, as long as you’re giving your locks some TLC in the form of a hair mask. Find a mask that is rich in natural ingredients that will restore hydration to your hair, leaving it looking so healthy that no one will believe it’s not your natural colour.
Skipping Regular Hair Cuts
While it might seem counterintuitive to cut your hair when you’re trying to let it grow, regularly trimming your hair can actually promote growth by making it stronger.
By booking regular trims, you’ll stop split ends in their tracks, preventing them from travelling further up the hair strand and causing your hair to become weak and frizzy.
Treatments
According to Medical News Today, several factors can cause hair to become dry and prone to breakage, including exposure to the sun and the overuse of heat styling products.
To protect your hair from these factors, it’s essential to use the best shampoos and treatments for your locks. We understand that choosing hair care products in this oversaturated market can be confusing—especially when looking for those without any nasties.
One treatment designed to repair and restore your hair from the inside out is Georgimane’s 10-minute hair mask from Terry White Chemmart - Caddens Corner. Not only does the mask deeply hydrate your hair, but it also works to prevent future breakage and damage, allowing you to live your best hair life.
Medical
The saying goes, "beauty comes from within," and the same can be said for your hair. Dry and brittle hair that is regularly breaking can sometimes be the result of a deeper underlying issue.
From diet and stress to other health issues such as low iron, all of these factors can contribute to hair breakage and loss. If you notice that your hair isn't bouncing back after changing your hair routine, it’s always best to visit your doctor for appropriate advice and treatment.

The Best SPF Skincare Routine
The ultimate guide to achieving glowing, protected skin every day!
We'll dive into the importance of sunscreen for daily skin protection. Say goodbye to sun damage and hello to radiant skin!
Importance of Sunscreen
Before we jump into the nitty-gritty of crafting the perfect SPF skincare routine, let's talk about why sunscreen is your skin's superhero. Sunscreen shields your skin from harmful UV rays, preventing sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. Plus, it keeps your complexion looking flawless and youthful.
Morning Skincare: Incorporating Sunscreen
Cleansing and Prepping Your Skin
Starting your day with a clean canvas is crucial. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, and impurities, allowing your sunscreen to work its magic effectively.
When to Apply Sunscreen in Your Skincare Routine
Timing is everything when it comes to sunscreen application. After moisturising, wait a few minutes for your moisturiser to sink in, then apply your sunscreen. While some may wonder if sunscreen can replace moisturiser, it's best to use both for optimal hydration and sun protection. With Bondi Sands, you can achieve the perfect balance for radiant, moisturised skin. Some of their sunscreens are specifically designed to be gentle on sensitive or acne-prone skin and won't clog pores or exacerbate breakouts.
Sunscreen Application Techniques
Apply sunscreen before makeup for a seamless finish. Bondi Sands’ Sunscreen face formulas can easily be worn under makeup without compromising your glow! It's also beneficial to find the best sunscreen for your skin type.
Reapplying Sunscreen All Day
Need to reapply sunscreen without messing up your makeup? No problem! Sunscreen mist can easily be spritzed over makeup throughout the day to keep your skin protected and your makeup intact.
Night-time Skincare and SPF
While sunscreen is essential during the day, you can give your skin a breather at night. Make sure you wash off any Sunscreen residue on your face using your cleanser of choice. Focus on nourishing and replenishing your skin after a day of sun exposure. We recommend you double cleanse before you go to bed and you'll wake up to soft, supple skin ready to take on the day ahead.
Skincare Tip
To gently exfoliate your skin while boosting collagen production, try using a Serum at night for a rejuvenated, smooth complexion.
Get The Best SPF Protection
Now that you've unlocked the secrets to the perfect SPF skincare routine, it's time to take action!

Woolworth's Chilli Cottage Cheese Pizza Recipe
It's easy being cheesy with a slice of this delicious pizza! Take your toppings game to a new level with cottage cheese and chilli.
Ingredients
500g Woolworths creamed cottage cheese
2 cups self-raising flour ( plus extra for dusting)
1 tsp dried chilli flakes
5ml extra virgin olive oil cooking spray
1/4 cup tomato paste
200g Solanato® tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup Woolworths pitted kalamata olives with garlic and chilli
10g parmesan, finely grated
1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
1/2 bunch fresh basil, leaves picked
Directions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 220°C/200°C fan-forced. Line 2 large trays with baking paper and sprinkle with a little flour.
Step 2
Blend 1¾ cups of the cottage cheese in a small food processor or blender until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl, add flour and half the chilli flakes and mix until a dough forms. Transfer dough out onto a lightly floured bench and knead for 2 minutes or until smooth. Return to the bowl, cover with a tea towel and set aside to rest for 10 minutes or until dough springs back slightly when poked with a finger.
Step 3
Divide dough in half and place on trays. Use your fingers to gently push dough outwards from the centre, rotating dough, to form a 24cm round with a 1.5cm crust. Spray with oil and bake for 10 minutes.
Step 4
Remove bases from the oven. Top with tomato paste, remaining cottage cheese, tomatoes, olives and parmesan. Drizzle with oil. Cook for 10 minutes or until golden. Top with fresh basil and remaining chilli flakes to serve.
R U OKAY? SIMPLE STEPS THAT COULD CHANGE A LIFE
Ask R U OK? Any Day because life happens every day.
A lot can happen in a year, a month, a week. Whether it’s your friend, family member, colleague, partner, or teammate, the people you care about go through life’s ups and downs every day.
By having regular, meaningful conversations, you build trust and normalise talking about what’s really going on, so when the people in your world find themselves struggling, they know you’re someone they can talk to.
While R U OK? Day on Thursday, September 12, is our National Day of Action, we encourage you to ask R U OK? any day of the year. Remember, a simple conversation can change a life. 💛
We are fundraising for R U OK? to help spread their message and help prevent suicide. About 8 people take their own lives in Australia every day. We want to help change these numbers. Your contribution can make a difference, helping us continue to spread the message and encourage life-changing conversations!
By inspiring people to take the time to ask, “Are you OK?” and listen, we can help people who are struggling with life to feel connected long before they even think about suicide.
Thank you so much for your support, together we will make a difference.🤝
Simple Steps That Can Change Your Life
A CONVERSATION COULD CHANGE A LIFE
Got a feeling that someone you know or care about isn’t behaving as they normally would? Perhaps they seem out of sorts? More agitated or withdrawn? Or they’re just not themselves. Trust that gut instinct and act on it. Learn more about the signs and when it's time to ask R U OK?
If you have noticed these signs, it's time to trust the Signs, trust your gut and ask R U OK?
Do they seem:
Confused or irrational
Moody
Unable to switch off
Concerned about the future
Concerned they’re a burden
Lonely or lacking self-esteem
Concerned they’re trapped or in pain
Are they:
Experiencing mood swings
Becoming withdrawn
Changing their online behaviour
Losing interest in what they used to love
Unable to concentrate
Less interested in their appearance and personal hygiene
Behaving recklessly
Changing their sleep patterns
Are they experiencing:
Relationship issues
Major health issues
Work pressure or constant stress
Financial difficulty
Loss of someone or something they care about
By starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up. If they say they are not OK, you can follow our conversation steps to show them they’re supported and help them find strategies to better manage the load. If they are OK, that person will know you’re someone who cares enough to ask.
GETTING READY TO ASK
Before you can look out for others, you need to look out for yourself. And that’s OK. If you're not in the right headspace or you don't think you're the right person to have the conversation, try to think of someone else in their support network who could talk to them.
To help you decide whether you’re ready to start a meaningful conversation, ask yourself:
AM I READY?
Am I in a good headspace?
Am I willing to genuinely listen?
Can I give as much time as needed?
AM I PREPARED?
Do I understand that if I ask how someone’s going, the answer could be: “No, I’m not”?
Do I understand that I can’t ‘fix’ someone’s problems?
Do I accept that they might not be ready to talk? Or they might not want to talk to me?
PICKED MY MOMENT?
Have I chosen somewhere relatively private and comfy?
Have I figured out a time that will be good for them to chat?
Have I made sure I have enough time to chat properly?

20 Tips to Elevate Your Sleep Experience
It’s well-known that sleep is essential for health and wellbeing. It has a direct positive influence on energy levels, psychological wellbeing, memory, immune system and stress-management – but isn’t limited to just these areas.
On the other hand, poor sleep leads to a reduced attention span, increased irritability, impaired judgement, reduced physical coordination and more.
When sustained over time, poor sleep is linked to health concerns including diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Unfortunately, 1 in 4 Australian adults aren’t getting enough good-quality sleep.
If this is you, the good news is there is plenty you can do - here are 20 tips to elevate your sleep experience.
1. Linen lover
Make your bed and bedroom as inviting as possible, with high quality sheets and blankets that are comfortable to the touch, cushions, soft lighting, plants and other snuggly or calming items.
2. Realise that sleep varies
Thinking sleep can only be good or bad is not helpful. You may sleep fine, good enough or better than yesterday. These nuances allow us to widen our perception of sleep.
3. Know yourself
Many people have absorbed the idea that eight hours is the ideal, but that isn’t the case for us all. Try not to prescribe to strict rules about how much sleep is enough sleep – and listen to your body, mind and how rested and generally well you feel instead.
4. Progressive muscle relaxation
Lie or sit comfortably, then slowly focus on individual muscles, tensing them for 10 seconds before releasing. Breathe normally throughout. Doing this before bedtime can help release tension and promote physical relaxation.
5. Calm and relaxing activities
Do these an hour or two before bedtime. Think meditation, reading, journalling, a warm shower, stretching, a gentle stroll, drawing, listening to music or a slow skincare routine.
6. Mindfulness, and breathing
According to Beyond Blue, these can help us focus on the present moment when anxiety creeps in, let go of daily stress and ease our mind into sleep. Apps are available with free sleep mindfulness and meditation exercises to get started.
7. Power down
Everyone loves a late-night movie or scroll. However, phones, laptops and TV emit blue light which stimulates the brain to make us feel awake, making it harder to wind down before bed.
Sleep Health Foundation says that bright screens for 1.5 hours or more before bedtime can increase alertness and that repeated bright screen use over five days delays the natural body clock by 1.5 hours.
While everyone is affected differently, it’s a good idea to limit pre-bed scrolling time.
8. Audio
Try listening to calming music, instrumentals or soundscapes to help you fall asleep. There are even special sleep podcasts where nothing much happens, so you can nod off and not feel you’ve missed the story.
9. Avoid overstimulation before bed
This includes projects or other work that may increase alertness. Need to have a difficult conversation? Schedule it earlier in the day so you can have time to debrief.
10. Set worry time
Beyond Blue says signs that your anxiety may be heightened at night include tightness, feeling you cannot control your anxious thoughts, catastrophic thinking and difficulty calming down. If you tend to worry in bed, set yourself “worry time” during the day.
Importantly, don’t do this in your bedroom or close to bedtime.
11. Consistency
Spontaneity is great – just not when we need to slip into sleep.
Going to bed and waking at roughly the same time each day (including weekends) can help long-term sleep quality and help the body’s circadian rhythm align itself better.
12. Limit naps
It's fine to nap if you need to. However Health Direct8 recommend keeping your shuteye short (no more than 30 minutes), avoid napping too close to bedtime, and ideally have a 4 hour wake window before bed.
13. Consider the root
Rather than catastrophising (“I’ll never sleep again!”) consider what could be at the root (“I’ve been stressed about doing my tax return. I’ll put aside a morning next weekend to get it done.”)
14. Skip the nightcap
Caffeine stimulates the nervous system3 helping us power through a busy day, though is less helpful when you’re trying to sleep. Additionally, a low amount of alcohol (just 2 drinks for men and less than 1 for women, according to SleepFoundation.org) can decrease sleep quality by 9.3%.
Opt for tart cherry juice, hot cocoa (not sweet chocolate), warm milk, herbal or decaffeinated tea instead.
15. Reduce fluids
What goes in must come out, and if you drink several cups of water before bed, chances are you’ll need to make a night-time dash to the toilet. Try to cut down on fluids in the evening and use the bathroom just before bed.
16. Move it!
Exercise during the day can increase our sleep quality by reducing the time it takes to fall asleep and help reduce daytime sleepiness.
It also helps relieve stress, which can be a contributing factor to poor sleep.
The fall in body temperature after we finish exercising can also signal to the body that it’s time to rest. The BetterHealth Channel recommends moderate evening exercise to help us wind down.
17. CBT-I
The Sleep Health Foundation reports that CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia) is an evidence-based, first line treatment for insomnia, which has been found to help 80% of people with insomnia. While results may be gradual, they are normally long-lasting.
18. Think light
A big, warming meal can be heartening – but it can also leave us feeling heavy or plagued with heartburn and reflux, none of which helps our sleep. The Sleep Health Foundation recommends allowing 2-3 hours between your last meal and bedtime.
Try eating earlier and lighter, and if you need to snack before bed opt for something low GI and protein-rich (such as a boiled egg, some Greek yoghurt or even walnuts, which naturally contain melatonin!).
19. Troubleshoot
If you are experiencing daytime sleepiness, snore heavily or have type 2 diabetes, depression or high blood pressure, see your GP to rule out a disorder like sleep apnoea.
20. Talk alternatives with your Pharmacist
If you do need support, there are plenty of sleep supplements with natural sleep aids in their ingredients. Speak with your Terry White Chemmart Pharmacist.
